As I write this (Alison B) it feels like a time of beginnings and endings.

As November begins, the Black History Month (October) is coming to an end whilst our desire to become an Inclusive Methodist Church continues.  If you haven’t had time, make time to take a look and listen to the stories of our black history.

Last weekend the Six Nations Rugby tournament finally finished with a victorious England squad holding the cup.  Started in February 2020 and due originally to conclude in March, the final four matches were postponed as the first lockdown kicked in.  With limitations on training and no crowd to cheer, the final matches took place and victory was secured.

As we begin November, a new national lockdown starts in England, whilst Wales (some of our NWM churches cross over the border!) ends its 17-day firebreak lockdown.  The Isle of Man has fewer restrictions as it has been able to minimise the spread of the disease.  And so, some of us, the Methodist people begin again to deny ourselves the joy of gathered worship in beloved places for the greater good and find different and new ways to be disciples, followers of Jesus.  But it feels like we are beginning in a different place compared to lockdown 1.

The words of Philippians 3:12 came to mind.  ‘I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me... forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead... I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus’.

As the Learning Network continues, all our events will be offered virtually – online or by phone.  They can be found in our calendar on our website which is regularly updated with our own events as well as those from across the Connexion.  And as geographical barriers melt away, opportunities for learning and development offered across the whole Connexion are available to those with online access.

Webinar: Prayer and a Methodist Way of Life

Friday 13 November, 10.30am to 12:00pm

A Methodist Way of Life is a way of living; trying to live our lives in response to God's love that is made known to us in Jesus. How can we encourage children and young people to develop a rhythm of discipleship that includes regular, practical actions of worship, learning and caring, service and evangelism?  And how do we help them to develop a rhythm of prayer that encourages them to expect God to speak?

This event is open to everyone, but we especially recommend that Group Leaders engaging with the 3Generate 365 process participate.

Webinar: Young people, body image and self-esteem - building a culture of worth for all

Friday 4 December, 10:30am to 12:00pm

With research demonstrating that young people's self-esteem levels are at the lowest in UK history, how can we create a culture of worth for all?  This webinar will help participants understand the key factors in the formation of self-esteem and explore the issues that can undermine it.  Focusing on body image, it will equip participants with practical strategies to empower young people to challenge negative thought patterns and rebuke 'identity thieves' in popular culture.  This webinar will be led by Claire Rush, who is the Mission & Advocacy Enabler for Girls' Brigade Ministries and a Vice-President of Girls' Brigade International.

Using a Methodist Way of Life: Webinar

Thursday 10 December, 10:30am to 12.00pm

The Methodist Way of Life provides a set of commitments and practices that encourage and equip people to better live a Christian life.  This introductory webinar provides some background to Methodist Way of Life and explores some of the ways in which it might be used in your context. We will listen together to an introduction from Revd Roger Walton, with some suggestions for the use in Methodist Way of Life in local contexts.  We’ll also have time for some discussion about how Methodist Way of Life might be useful for you and those you work with.
